The major goal is to determine the ability of UV generated by UVC handheld device to inactivate SARS-CoV-2. We want to complete a dose ranging study for inactivation of pathogens on surfaces using our UVC device. We would like to use a standard method for sanitizing non-porous hard surfaces, such as ASTM E1153 - 14 or the like. With our device, the handheld would irradiate the surface at a distance of 2 inches for 1, 2, 5, 10 seconds. We would then evaluate the log reduction of the pathogen compared to a control non-irradiated sample.

The primary objective of this project is to identify drug compounds that may inhibit SARS-CoV-2 replication in an in vitro tissue culture assay. Vero E6 cells will be used to evaluate the effectiveness of the test articles to inhibit SARS-CoV-2 replication.

The goal of this project is to guide the investigation of the effects of the experimental drug on male fertility in male marmosets. Marmoset fertility will be assessed via sperm collection and testicular biopsy to determine whether the drug effectively ends the production of live sperm.

Preterm Infants: Up to 5 pregnant baboons will be moved indoors to single caging. They will have a healthcheck with blood collection as well as an ultrasound to confirm gestational age of pregnancy. The blood will be processed for a CBC and routine chemistry by the SNPRC Clinical Pathology Laboratory. Upon approval by both the SNPRC veterinarian and PI, three animals will be selected to receive two injections of antenatal steroids followed by a C-section for preterm delivery. Unselected dams will be released back to the SNPRC colony.

We aim to develop and test the performance of a 2nd generation TB Color Plate test with the ultimate goal of developing and implementing a faster (14 vs. 56-84 days), field-based, easy-to-use, and inexpensive drug susceptibility testing (DST) for drug-resistant TB in high TB index rate regions. This will allow faster detection, cost reductions, and thus, significantly aid in preventing transmission of drug-resistant TB in humans.

The project is a proof-of-concept study to evaluate the potential of a novel process for the facile detection of pathogens in the field.  Using Marburg virus as our model pathogen we will assess the feasibility and sensitivity of the system.
