SwRI and UTSA will create synthetic process for antibiotic drug discovery

Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) is collaborating with The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) to explore and develop a novel platform or chemical process for synthesizing antibiotic compounds with a $125,000 grant. The project, one of two winning proposals this cycle, is supported by the Connecting through Research Partnerships (Connect) program designed to foster collaboration between SwRI and UTSA.

Postoperative complications and readmissions rates are higher in minority and low socioeconomic status (SES)patients. Low SES is associated with frailty, one of the best predictors of 30-day postoperative complicationsand early hospital readmission. Despite their influence on health outcomes, frailty and social risk factors are notconsidered in risk adjustment for reimbursement and quality measures. CMS developed financial incentive-based programs to improve quality of care.
