Over 25% of the US population >65 years of age have type 2 diabetes and 80% of these individuals are overweight or obese. These individuals face shortened lifespans, increased health care needs, greater medical complications, and lower quality of life relative to those of similar age without these conditions. Lifestyle interventions focused on weight loss are recommended for overweight and obese individuals with type 2 diabetes, but whether these interventions meaningfully improve the lives of older individuals with diabetes over extended follow-up is unknown.

With its evolving Cores, enrichment and training programs, and supported research projects, the San Antonio (SA) Nathan Shock Aging Center has for nearly 20 years provided critical support to investigators locally, nationally and abroad. With its existing and growing intellectual capital, the SA Shock Center is poised to provide (1) anenhanced platform to conduct horizontally-integrated (lifespan, healthspan, pathology) transformative research in the biology of aging, and (2) a springboard for advanced educational and training activities.

3-aminobutyric acid, or GABA, is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the mammalian brain. Dysfunctions in GABA-mediated inhibition have been implicated in the etiology of a variety of brain disorders. Furthermore, GABA receptors are targets for a host of therapeutic and endogenous modulators such as benzodiazepines, barbiturates, and neurosteroids. Key to understanding the etiology of these diseases and the molecular mechanisms of these modulators, is a detailed understanding of the activation mechanism of the GABA receptor.

Abnormal regulation of glycemia ('dysglycemia') has a very long time course, from its earliest stage, labeled pre-diabetes, to the onset of Type 2 diabetes (T2D), to the development of clinically detectable microvascular changes and measurable atherosclerosis, to clinically manifest complications with attendant morbidity and mortality.

The aim of this pilot study is to investigate adaptations to unpredictable environments in nocturnal galagos (Galagidae). Animal species may develop adaptive coping mechanisms to improve fitness in environments with unpredictable changes in climate extremes (e.g. El Ni??o). Gummivory - feeding on the gum and sap of woody plant species - is thought to be an adaptive strategy that may have evolved in response to these sudden unpredictable environmental changes.
