Southwest Research Institute has developed a unique technology (US20230242487A1) that enables the safe and efficient synthesis of organophosphorus nerve agent (OPNA) oxime antidotes. Using this technology, SwRI scientists can not only successfully synthesize currently known highly effective nerve agent countermeasures, but also effectively develop promising new drug candidates to treat nerve agent exposure.

The project, led by SwRI’s Dr. Mark Libardoni and UTSA’s Dr. Marzieh Memar and Dr. Morteza Seidi, is supported by a $125,000 grant from the Connecting through Research Partnerships (Connect) program.

The Human Performance Initiative at SwRI has developed a markerless biomechanics system to capture human motion data in any environment with accuracy that rivals laboratory-based motion capture systems. This technology applies to the fields of peak human performance, medical diagnostics, and veterinary/zoological sciences. While the currently deployed system processes video data across multiple cameras, the neural network backbone is only looking at single frames and making predictions based on that small datapoint.

Southwest Research Institute has developed an efficient, fully synthetic method to produce scopolamine, a plant-derived compound used to prevent nausea and vomiting from motion sickness and anesthesia. The accomplishment marks the first time SwRI has fully synthesized a drug compound that is naturally derived from plants.
