Spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) are required for sperm production and male fertility. but we do not yet understand how activity of these cells is regulated or even precisely where they reside in the seminiferous tubules of the testis. Our previous single-cell RNA-seq results have defined transcriptome signatures of spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) that discriminate these cells from all other spermatogenic cell types in the adult mammalian testis. We hypothesize that spatial genomic detection of this SSC signature in tissue sections will reveal the location of mammalian SSCs.

The Covid-19 pandemic. caused by the virus SARS-Cov2. is the gravest public health crisis in a century. causing over 2.5 million global deaths and enormous human suffering. Along with its signature infection of the respiratory system. are widely seen serious deleterious effects on the brain. Cognitive manifestations of brain infection include delirium. a state characterized by confusion and disorientation. which is prevalent in 70% of Covid-19 patients with severe symptoms and memory deficits. Critically. delirium is often associated with long-term cognitive decline and neurodegeneration.

Overview: A primary goal of biological anthropology is to understand the evolutionary processes behind primate and human adaptation and phenotypic diversity. Body size shifts over time may have contributed to primate diversification. adaptation to varied habitats and lifestyles. and encephalization. including in the hominin lineage. It is largely accepted that primates have followed a trend of increasing body size over time; however. size reduction (phyletic miniaturization) has convergently evolved within hominins and multiple primate clades.

In light of the currently extant Covid pandemic. the impact of understanding upper airway health and being prepared for the rapid development of novel therapeutics has been reinforced. While preclinical animal models have long been the gold standard for the testing and development of novel therapeutics. they are expensive and time consuming. The availability of validated. reproducible and scalable in vitro diagnostics that reproduce relevant physiology and function as test-benches for the rapid testing and development of personalized medicine therapeutics is thus invaluable.

This research project will:(1) Perform analysis of deep-sequencing data from hundreds of samples. The workflow will include creating sequencing quality control (QC reports). merging overlapping pairs. trimming low quality reads. mapping reads to database. conducting OTU clustering. conducting abundance analysis and diversity analysis. and performing phylogenetic analysis and single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) analysis. (2) Receive. process.

OVERVIEW.The objective of the proposed research project is to evolve catalytic cycloaddition reactions that originate through metallovinylcarbene [3+n]-cycloaddition processes in new directions. We will develop transformations made possible with [3+n]-cycloaddition products. will advance Br??nsted acid catalyzed cycloaddition reactions for efficient. previously unattainable molecular constructions. and will use novel chiral donor-acceptor (D-A) cyclopropanes for cycloaddition that occurs with retention of configuration.

This renewal proposal outlines the expansion of the existing Center for Innovative Drug Discovery (CIDD). a truly first of its kind resource of core facilities and capabilities in South Texas to better support the discovery and development of new cancer therapeutics. The CIDD. which is comprised of two integrated core facilities for Medicinal Chemistry at UTSA and High Throughput Screening at UTHSA. has been providing researchers in San Antonio and South Texas access to coordinated technologies.

Many commonly prescribed chemotherapy drugs have adverse side effects that include disruptions in taste. It is reported that 50-80% of cancer patients who receive chemotherapy treatments experience taste alteration in the form of reduced taste sensitivity. distorted taste perception. or even complete loss of taste during treatment1-5. These deficits can persist for months beyond the end of therapy. Indeed. the side effects of chemotherapy on taste is listed as one of the most disturbing elements of treatment.
