In the diabetic retina disruption of fractalkine (FKN) signaling induces fibrin(ogen) deposition. increased production of IL-1??? by microglia. vascular and neuronal damage.But. how FKN and its receptor. CX3CR1. regulate microglia activation and retinal pathology is unknown. In humans. two single nucleotide polymorphisms in the CX3CR1 locus (hCX3CR1-I249/M280) that show defective binding to FKN. play a key role in inflammation during diabetes.Induction of diabetes in a mouse model expressing the human CX3CR1-I249/M280 revealed accelerated neuronal loss in the retina.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the United States. with approximately 135.000 Americans dying of the disease each year. A 2017 report by the City of San Antonio Metropolitan Health District identified cancer as the 2 cause of death amongst Bexar County residents and predicted that by 2020 it would become the leading cause of death [1]. To mitigate its impact. the United State Preventative Task Force recommends annual radiologic screening with computed tomography (CT) in at risk individuals [2]. During this screening process.

The Center for Innovative Drug Discovery (CIDD) will provide Dr. Kunal Rai at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center with the custom synthesis of PROTACs and CIDD-0150877 analogs to support their research on YAP1 degraders. The CIDD will provide the compound design on new analogs to prepare. along with the detailed experimental conditions and analytical data associated with the established synthesis routes. The CIDD will design specific analogs based on the testing results and provide full medicinal chemistry support to optimize compounds. YAP1 potency. selectivity.

Spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) are required for sperm production and male fertility. but we do not yet understand how activity of these cells is regulated or even precisely where they reside in the seminiferous tubules of the testis. Our previous single-cell RNA-seq results have defined transcriptome signatures of spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) that discriminate these cells from all other spermatogenic cell types in the adult mammalian testis. We hypothesize that spatial genomic detection of this SSC signature in tissue sections will reveal the location of mammalian SSCs.

The Covid-19 pandemic. caused by the virus SARS-Cov2. is the gravest public health crisis in a century. causing over 2.5 million global deaths and enormous human suffering. Along with its signature infection of the respiratory system. are widely seen serious deleterious effects on the brain. Cognitive manifestations of brain infection include delirium. a state characterized by confusion and disorientation. which is prevalent in 70% of Covid-19 patients with severe symptoms and memory deficits. Critically. delirium is often associated with long-term cognitive decline and neurodegeneration.

Overview: A primary goal of biological anthropology is to understand the evolutionary processes behind primate and human adaptation and phenotypic diversity. Body size shifts over time may have contributed to primate diversification. adaptation to varied habitats and lifestyles. and encephalization. including in the hominin lineage. It is largely accepted that primates have followed a trend of increasing body size over time; however. size reduction (phyletic miniaturization) has convergently evolved within hominins and multiple primate clades.

In light of the currently extant Covid pandemic. the impact of understanding upper airway health and being prepared for the rapid development of novel therapeutics has been reinforced. While preclinical animal models have long been the gold standard for the testing and development of novel therapeutics. they are expensive and time consuming. The availability of validated. reproducible and scalable in vitro diagnostics that reproduce relevant physiology and function as test-benches for the rapid testing and development of personalized medicine therapeutics is thus invaluable.
